A powerful typhoon hit the Philippines today, cutting off electricity to millions and disrupting Christmas celebrations for tens of thousands who fled its approach.
Typhoon Nock-Ten made landfall in the eastern province of Catanduanes at 6.30pm local time and is tearing westwards with gusts of 146 miles an hour and heavy rain.
State weather service officials said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the storm, but darkness has now fallen and the true damage may not be known until dawn.
