The US embassy in Ankara released a “security message” warning citizens living in the country that Islamist fanatic groups, such as the Islamic State, will be planning attacks against them.
The statement tells Westerners to “avoid large crowds” during the festive period, over fears they could be targeted by a terror attack.
The statement reads: “US Mission Turkey reminds US citizens that extremist groups are continuing aggressive efforts to conduct attacks throughout Turkey in areas where US citizens and expatriates reside or frequent.
“As we approach the end of 2016, US citizens should be mindful of this when deciding to attend public gatherings for holiday and New Year’s Eve celebrations.
“US citizens are encouraged to review the Europe Travel Alert and reminded to be aware of their immediate surroundings.
