Many of Italy’s cities are home to bustling Christmas markets throughout December, packed full of sweet treats and handmade goods ready to be wrapped up ahead of the big day.
But in the last crucial days before December 25, stalls are likely to experience a lull in shoppers after Monday night’s atrocity.
More than 49 people were injured and many remain in hospital in serious conditions after a truck ploughed into crowds at the market in Breitscheidplatz.
Police initially arrested a Pakistani migrant on suspicion of the crime, but he has now been released as officers hunt for a man known as Anis Amri, a Tunisian man suspected of being involved with Islamic extremists.
