President Barack Obama has ordered a review of cyberattacks that targeted Democratic organizations and operatives during the 2016 elections, with an eye toward releasing at least some of the findings, the White House said today.

‘The president has directed the intelligence community to conduct a full review of what happened during the 2016 election process,’ Lisa Monaco, Obama’s homeland security advisor, told reporters at a breakfast newsmaker event Friday.

The objective is to have the review completed before the end of Obama’s term and get it into the public domain before President-elect Donald Trump moves into the White House.

The push, initiated just this week, runs parallel to congressional calls for an inquiry, but wasn’t inspired by them, according to the White House.

Monaco said at a breakfast hosted by The Christian Science Monitor that it was vital to ‘understand what this means, what has happened and to impart some lessons learned.’
