The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said tsunami waves could arrive in Hawaii at just before 3pm local time (1am GMT).

Other islands across the Pacific also scrambled to prepare for destructive waves after the massive quake this evening.

As well as Hawaii, the states at risk included the Solomon Islands themselves, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Nauru, New Caledonia, Tuvalu and Kosrae.

The epicentre was recorded roughly 43 miles from the Solomon Islands, according to United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The island nation could soon be hit by waves up to 10 feet in height, the warning centre said.

PTWC said: “A tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicentre.
