Danish politician Kenneth Kristensen Berth quickly took to social media after making the controversial remarks to clarify he had meant only warning shots should be fired.

The EU spokesman for the eruosceptic Danish People’s Party’s tried to walk back his comments on Facebook after he was condemned by fellow parliamentarians.

Mette Frederiksen, the leader of the opposition Social Democrats, said: “Of course you don’t shoot at people who are fleeing. It shouldn’t be necessary to say.”

While Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, of the Liberal Party, said the comments even after Mr Berth’s clarification as “warning shots are… a warning of what is to follow”.

The online fury with the MP was sparked after he went head-to-head with the Danish European Movement chairwoman Stine Bosse.

During the debate, Mr Berth said migrants who try to reach the Continent by boat in the Mediterranean should be fired at.

He told Europa Magasinet: “The only way you can do it effectively is simply to turn the boats away and say ‘You can’t sail into this territorial border, if you do you will either be shot or you will be turned around and sailed back’.”

Seemingly unable to believe the anti-EU politician’s comments, the forum’s host Ole Stephensen gave Mr Berth the opportunity to clarify his comments.
