The Estonian Defence League (EDL) is carrying out war games alongside the country’s conventional armed forces as tensions escalate.
More than 15,000 Estonians have so far signed up in the wake of Russia’s aggressive foreign policy actions in Ukraine, which continue to worry other eastern European nations.
It can be mobilised within 24 hours and has seen a spike in new recruits since the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Thousands more Estonians, including growing numbers of women and teenagers, have pledged allegiance to other defence forces that could be called upon to repel a Russian invasion.
Around 10,000 have joined the Women’s Home Defence, Young Eagles and Home Daughters volunteer leagues.
EDL says its main responsibility is to “enhance the nation’s readiness to defend the independence of Estonia and its constitutional order”.
