DONALD Trump has hit back at claims he may have angered China by taking a phone call with rival Taiwan, claiming Taiwan’s President Tsai Ying-wen called him.

The incoming President took a phone call with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ying-wen on Friday – marking the first time a US President has spoken with their Taiwanese counterpart since 1979.

Critics hit out at the Republican, questioning whether he was aware of the long-standing silence and weak diplomatic relations between the two nations, and blasting him for making a “blunder”.

But others speculated that the call may signal a bold new foreign policy towards Taiwan due to be adopted by Trump’s Administration.

The US sparked frosty relations with Taiwan in the 1970s when President Nixon supported China’s ‘One China’ policy, which placed Taiwan as part of its territory.
