With trust in mainstream media outlets plunging to historic lows, a Yahoo News columnist has an ingenious idea to restore faith in the MSM – indoctrinate children in schools to only place confidence in the corporate press.
Citing a Washington Post article about “fake news” that has been vehemently debunked for relying on a “Russian propaganda” list that includes even left-wing sites critical of Hillary Clinton, Matt Bai says social media giants like Facebook censoring “fake news” will not be enough.
“The answer doesn’t lie in hectoring tech companies into policing content, but rather in teaching our kids how to consume it,” writes Bai, before going on to argue for having “media literacy” classes in schools that would instruct students on how to discern trustworthy sources of information.
“Here’s a radical thought: If President Trump is looking for a bold and useful education initiative that might serve the incidental purpose of redeeming what’s left of his soul, media literacy would be a pretty good place to start. Getting behind a nationwide push in K-through-12 classrooms could be an important and unifying priority for the incoming education secretary, Betsy DeVos,” he writes.
