The Russian leader told the US cooperation is essential as a further collapse in relations between the two powers could lead to “global catastrophe”.
During his annual State of the Nation speech in Moscow, Mr Putin emphasised his eagerness to work with President-elect Donald Trump.
Addressing the Federal Assembly in the Grand Kremlin Palace, Mr Putin said his nation would continue to stand up for its own interests overseas.
“Cooperation and collaboration with the United States in addressing global and regional issues is in the interest of the entire world,” he said.
“We are jointly responsible for providing international security and stability and ensuring the non-proliferation regime.
