Conservative Brexiteer Steve Baker claimed the president of the European Commission’s “political consensus is collapsing” as he called for Theresa May not to cave into European Union pressure and create a “UK-based migration policy”.

The MP for Wycombe also took aim at freedom of movement – one of the ‘four pillars’ which form the central structure of the European Union.

This comes after the Prime Minister came under pressure to guarantee the rights of European citizens in the UK while holding discussing with the Polish prime minister in Downing Street.

Eighty MPs, including Mr Baker, have signed a letter to the European Council president Donald Tusk criticising the EU’s refusal to allow formal talks on the matter.

They are calling for an early agreement on the rights of British citizens in EU countries.
