Vladimir Putin has been backed into a corner as a result of aggressive NATO actions, he claimed, adding: “Those actions undermine strategic stability and are forcing Russia to take reciprocal defensive measures, including some in the Western theatre.”

NATO, he said, continued to “dictate its will to other countries through economic and political means, as well as by military force”.

Russia is now equipping army units along its western border with state-of-the-art weapons alongside a programme of intensive combat training for the troops, Mr Shoigu added.

His comments come amid worsening relations between Moscow and Washington.

UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon attempted to diffuse rising east-west tensions yesterday when he rubbished claims that Russia and the UK were on course for conflict next year.

He told MPs: “I don’t agree that war with Russia is likely next year, I think that is too extreme.

“We have seen much greater Russian aggression this year than in previous years in terms of maritime and air deployments.

“But I don’t think that presages an open conflict next year.”
