Stuart Gerson, who also served as the Attorney General during 9/11, claimed that the next President could still be effective in enacting their policies.

The 72-year-old played down the partisan relations between Democrats and Republicans and claimed that gridlock in US politics can have its benefits.

He said: “Don’t underrate gridlock. It’s often times very useful for discussion, it leads to passage of things that are only necessary.

“We are highly over-regulated in the US, not to say there ought not to be regulation and oversight, but a lot of what we do is unintelligent.

“We should strip down government, get it more towards its essentials, and if the next administration has a more bipartisan view from the beginning, than a confrontational one, then there is no reason why it can’t succeed.”
