Tremors were felt in Rome after the quake struck at a depth of 17 miles at around 7.11pm (local time).

The quake struck a mountainous part of the Marche region, lasting several seconds.

Eyewitnesses reported powerful feelings in the western side of the country, with centuries-old buildings shaking.

No injuries have been reported.

It comes just a few days after a 3.6 magnitude quake hit the same part of central Italy that was devastated by a deadly quake in August.

The tremor struck near the town of Norcia in the central Italy, which was previously affected by a 6.0 earthquake in August which killed 298 people and devastated more than 2000 homes.
