Hurricane Matthew, the fiercest Caribbean storm in almost a decade, powered toward the Bahamas and Florida early on Wednesday after battering Haiti and Cuba with torrential rains.

The hurricane, which the United Nations said created the worst humanitarian crisis to hit struggling Haiti since a devastating 2010 earthquake, whipped Cuba and Haiti with 140 mile-per-hour winds on Tuesday, pummeling towns, farmland and resorts.

The outer bands of the category three hurricane – which was downgraded from category four last night – were initially not expected to hit the southeastern US coastline, including Florida and South Carolina.

But after battering several towns and cities in the Caribbean, a warning has been issued to households in South Carolina to get out now while they can – or face a direct hit.

The eye of the storm was about 115 miles south of Long Island in the Bahamas on Wednesday morning and it was expected to be very near the east coast of Florida by tonight.

The most powerful Atlantic tropical storm in almost a decade, Hurricane Matthew took aim for Bahamas today after leaving a trail of destruction across Haiti and Cuba.

The storm, so powerful it caused a huge landslide in Haiti yesterday evening, has destroyed and damaged hundreds of homes – although it remains too early to fully assess the damage caused.

At least 11 people have been killed in the chaos across the Caribbean.

Five people are known to have died in Haiti so far including a man who drowned trying to rescue a child who fell into a rushing river.

In Dominican Republic, four lost their lives. One person died in Colombia, and another in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
