The suspected jihadist was shot in the leg after stabbing the two officers – one in the stomach and one in the neck – in the Belgian capital of Brussels, after the pair stopped to question him.

The armed assailant slashed both men before making a getaway on foot, but fellow officers in a police car gave chase and tackled the attacker.

The knifeman broke another policeman’s nose in the struggle to subdue him, and was eventually shot in the leg before he was arrested.

Prosecutors have confirmed that the man “could certainly have been motivated by terrorism”.

A police spokesman gave a condition update on the injured officers, saying: “’One was stabbed in the stomach, and the other in the neck, but neither was seriously hurt.”
