Dr Sally Leivesley, a specialist in catastrophic and extreme risk, said so-called multiple-target terror attacks on aviation hubs in the West were “starting to become a serious problem”.

Speaking at a gathering of international terror experts at Heathrow Airport, she said: “Over the last year we have seen many types of threats in Europe.

“We’ve started to see threats to airports, we’ve started to see quite dramatic attacks on airports.

“However, in some of the conflict zones, those attacks have been going on for years.

“What’s happening on the European side is that some countries are now going into that threat scenario and some of the military-trained terrorist personnel who have played havoc in other parts of the world are certainly going to reinforce, inspire, train and sometimes come back to their home countries in Europe.”
