The US Geological Survey has said that over 200 quakes have hit the Salton Sea area in Imperial Contey, with the tremors measuring between 1.4 and 4.3 on the Richter scale.

Experts including NASA have previously predicted that a huge earthquake could soon rock California as pressure on the San Andreas fault builds.

While the latest series of tremors were not on the San Andreas fault, they were close by, meaning that it could trigger action.

Seismologist Lucy Jones tweeted that earthquakes with a magnitude of four or above near to the San Andreas fault “increase the chance” of a huge quake.

Jennifer Andrews, a seismologist from the California Institute of Technology, said that they are “keeping an eye on it”, and that locals “said they thought this was leading up to the big one.”

In a move to reassure Californians, experts have pointed out that this is not the first time that a swarm of quakes have rocked the Salton Sea area.
