Dimitris Avramopoulos said the future of Europe could be based on countries joining together to solve the growing crisis.

This comes after Eurocrats Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker, as well as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, called for there to be greater unity shown by senior leaders.

Their pleas fell on deaf ears as the chief advisor to Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban said: “Why should we? Has the Commission started to act conciliatory?”

Mr Avramopoulos, speaking to France24, said despite some member state’s governments not agreeing with EU policy, Eurocrats will not allow Europe to “backtrack” to its “dark past”.
