BRITAIN is set to veto Jean-Claude Juncker’s plan for an EU army in a parting shot as Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said there can be no rival to NATO.

European Commission president Juncker, along with Germany and France, has drawn up a timetable to create a “common military force” to rival defence bloc NATO.

But Britain’s Defence Secretary has vowed to block proposals as long as the UK remains in the Union.

Sir Michael Fallon said: “We are full members of the EU and we will go on resisting any attempt to set up a rival to NATO.

“We have always been concerned about unnecessarily duplicating what we already have in NATO.”

Former Luxembourg prime minister Juncker wants to set up the EU army by June next year, operating from a centralised HQ and with a mandate to carry out “military interventions in crises”.

British taxpayers could be on the hook for around £825 million if the scheme goes ahead.

But a document from an EU summit in Slovakian capital Bratislava – to which the UK was not invited – does not explicitly state that such “crises” would have to happen abroad.

This has sparked fears the supra-national force could be used to crush anti-Brussels demonstrations.

Eurocrats have reacted with fury to British plans to sink the EU defence plan.
