Typhoon Meranti has battered the Asian country’s coastline, bringing misery to hundreds of thousands of people as it left a trail of destruction in its wake.
At least one person died and 44 people were injured in Taiwan, the Central Emergency Operation Centre confirmed.
Streets have turned into rivers as the deluge cut off electricity, disrupted power and water supplies and shattered windows in high-rise buildings.
A spokesman for Taiwan Red Cross said more than 900,000 homes were without power, while a further 50,000 suffered problems with their water supply.
