Warning of the likelihood of fresh attacks, Mr Valls said two terror plots had been foiled in just the last week.

Paris was put on high alert last week when French officials said they dismantled a “terrorist cell” that planned to attack a Paris railway station under the direction of Islamic State.

A car packed with gas canisters was also discovered parked near to the famous Notre Dame cathedral in the French capital which police said was part of an ISIS plot.

In an interview on Sunday with Europe 1 radio and Itele television, Mr Valls gave a stark assessment of the scale of the problem facing French security services.

He said some 15,000 possible jihadists were in the process of being recruited, adding that they were on the radar of police and intelligent services.

A further 1,400 suspects are currently being investigated for alleged terror offences, Mr Valls added.
