The migrant crisis has been rolling on for more than 18 months, battering Schengen borders and throwing countries into chaos over how to control it, now deepening financial woes are adding strain to nations – especially Greece.

The Union’s “better together” message has not been lost on Greek PM Alexis Tsipras who is keen on huddling together with other member states.

Tsipras’ team is pushing hard to encourage a meeting of southern European leaders in Athens on September 9, to which François Hollande has accepted an invitation.

The idea is to form a “southern front” on the two big issues still rocking the EU.

France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Malta have each been invited to the conference, which according to the Athens News Agency is aimed at creating a strong southern “axis” to counter the influence of countries in northern Europe.

Tsipras is rumoured to be nervous at the possibility of a collapse of the EU-Turkey migrant deal.

If the on-for-one agreement fails the PM’s nation could be hit with a human tide of migrants.

And the formation of a “southern front” would be the answer to his political prayers since the Greeks appear to be losing faith in their young leader.
