The Christian Social Union (CSU), Mrs Merkel’s Bavarian sister group to her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has hit out with accusations the German Chancellor is out of touch.
The CDU suffered an embarrassing electoral defeat in the right-wing state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania last week as voters responded to Mrs Merkel’s open-door migrant policy.
Last year the policy meant 1.1 million migrants came to Germany which has caused social upheaval and much political anger.
CSU leader Horst Seehofer, the usually outspoken prime minister of Bavaria, has held his tongue since the result on Sunday – until now.
He said: “The situation for the Union is highly threatening.
“People want to be taken seriously, but they are not.
“People do not want these ‘Berliner policies’.”
