A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean just a few miles off the coast of Northern California at 11:27 PM EASTERN US Time, at a very shallow depth of only 2.2 km. Numerous reports have come in from Eureka, CA from those who felt the quake.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake took place along a large and well known fault line called the Gorda Escarpment; the southern most end of the very dangerous Cascadia Subduction Zone. While minor earthquakes are routine in this area, a magnitude 5.6 is not a minor quake. It is “moderate” and could be a foreshock for a coming, larger earthquake.

There are presently no reports of any damage or injuries.

The National Tsunami Warning Center advises that NO TSUNAMI was generated by this earthquake.
