The stabbing took place on a train near the village of Sulz, in westernmost Vorarlberg province, with reports the attacker was a 60-year-old German man suffering from mental health problems.

The injured passengers – two of whom were teenagers – were sitting next to the suspect.

Police on patrol nearby were able to arrest the man while he was still on the train as it pulled into Sulz-Röthis station and a knife was recovered from the scene.

The attacker is believed to be German while the victims, aged 17, 19 and 22, are thought to be Austrian.

The youngest was stabbed in the throat while the 19-year-old was knifed in the stomach and back.

The unnamed 22-year-old received an injury to the hand while helping officers detain the suspect.

Police spokesman Horst Spitzhofer told AFP: “The man did not have a migration background. He is by all accounts mentally ill and we are largely excluding a terrorist act.”
