Two warships will lead the exercise on Monday supported by several other smaller Russian navy vessels.
The fleet includes two vessels armed with Kalibr-NK cruise missile, with eight missiles each, and will test Moscow’s ability to mount a sea invasion as well as counter terror attacks onboard a vessel.
The drill is scheduled to run until later this month and coincides with the Kremlin’s war games in the Black Sea.
Exercises involving warships and MI-8 and Ka-27PS helicopters will practice repelling underwater attacks by “saboteurs”, a statement said
The fleet’s commander said the ships would take part in counterterrorist activities, minesweeping and search and rescue operations.
The Russian defence ministry said the Mediterranean drills would be held to the east near the coast of Syria.
