Theresa May, who was at the forefront of the fight against terror during her six years as Home Secretary, plans to introduce tough new measures to counter the growing threat from extremists.
Millions are to be spent on extra armed police, thousands more spies are being recruited and the secret service is preparing to take the war to jihadi heartlands.
A source close to the Prime Minister said: “Nobody knows better than Theresa May the nature of the threat facing Britain.
“As the longest-serving Home Secretary she received regular intelligence briefings and took a hard stance against terrorists posing a threat to our national security.
“As Prime Minister she will continue to wage a war against terror and will redouble efforts to keep British citizens safe both at home and abroad.”
It follows the deaths of 84 people in Nice and the murder of Catholic priest Jacques Hamel in Normandy.
