Pregnant women are being told to cancel trips to Florida following the latest Zika outbreak.
Public Health England has advised pregnant women to scrap non-essential trips to the state after the country’s first cases of the virus not linked to travel were discovered.
However the risk in the state on the south-east coast of the country is moderate – while South American countries, including Olympic host Brazil, is high.
More than 1,650 Zika infections have been reported in the US – but the four patients in Miami, Florida, who have recently tested positive for the virus appear to be the first not linked to travel outside of the US.
The updated travel advice reads: ‘The risk in Florida is considered moderate based on the number and spread of cases and their demonstrated ability to implement effective control measures for similar diseases such as dengue – a virus transmitted by the same mosquito.
‘Pregnant women should consider postponing non-essential travel to affected areas until after the pregnancy.
