Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed the threat from the military coup is not over and the state of emergency has been enforced to help protect democracy.

Erdogan, who narrowly avoided being assassinated in a coastal hotel during last Friday’s attempted revolution, said people should not have “the slightest concern with regards to democracy, rule of law, fundamental rights and freedoms”.

But in a shocking twist, his govenerment have suspended the European Human Rights Convention as the state of emergency continues.

The defiant leader held meetings with his security council and cabinet before delivering his rousing speech to the nation.

He hailed those who had died in defence of his government as “martyrs” and announced “the nation would never forget the bravery and sacrifice of those who lost their lives”.

Erdogan went on to praise the “epics of heroic bravery throughout the night” that left at least 230 people dead and 1,400 injured.

He added foreign nations should stay out of Turkish affairs, blasting: “This nation has the right to determine our own destiny.”
