Just days after an extremely rare earthquake struck off the east coast of Florida, and even more rare earthquake has struck in Virginia. The magnitude 4.3 quake took place at coordinates 37.30 N 81.93 W in the far western area of Virginia as shown on the map above. The quake registered at a depth of 10 km.

Earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains are rare, but earthquakes on the US east coast are extremely rare. The makeup of the soil beneath the east coast is mostly bedrock, much harder and much older earth than out west. As such, when a quake occurs in the east, the vibrations travel farther and faster through the hard rock making the quake felt at much greater distances than they would be felt if the quake took place in other areas such as California.

There is no explanation right now as to why earthquakes have begun taking place is Florida and Virginia this week. The seismic areas in each place are long settled and earthquakes are extremely rare.
