ISLAMIST groups are waging a so-called asymmetric war against the West with increasing ferocity, but what can the West do to counter the threat of jihad?

Since 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan, the US and Europe have been forced to address growing instability in the Middle East which has spilled over into random acts of evil against Western cities.

Asymmetric warfare – of the type waged by ISIS lone wolves like Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel in Nice – involves appearing to match vastly superior forces like the USA and UK by staging high-profile attacks on soft targets to create the greatest amount of fear and panic. PR becomes a weapon of war.

And, because ISIS combatants ignore the established rules of war, there is no easy answer or quick fix solution to address the danger.

Dr Alan Mendoza, executive director of the Henry Jackson Society, said “conventional” warfare was no longer adequate in the battle against fanatical groups.

After the horrific events which claimed 84 lives in Nice he said: “The reason we are seeing increasing asymmetric attacks of this nature on our soil is because terrorists know the huge power at the disposal of the West means that they cannot defeat us conventionally.

“Terrorism of this kind is something we have seen before and will see again.”

After the disastrous war in Iraq, military planners reluctantly conceded that exporting wars to the Middle East was not an answer in itself to the threat from global terrorism.
