Border controls at three major road crossings into Italy from France, and the Ventimiglia train link between the two countries, will be strengthened.

Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano tweeted: “Our security apparatus is at work.”

Nice is just 35 km (22 miles) from the Italian border, and Mr Alfano has called an emergency meeting of Italy’s national anti-terrorism committee, which is taking place this morning.

Last night’s attack in Nice came just hours after Mr Alfano announced Italy had “intensified security” due to a “resurgence of jihadist threats.”

Italy’s security alert level, which was increased in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris last year, remains at two – the highest possible in the absence of a direct attack.

The country’s crisis unit has been activated, according to Italy’s Foreign Ministry, and the Italian consulate and embassy in Paris are trying to trying to establish if any Italian citizens were among the victims of last night’s attack.

There will also be tighter controls at airports, ports, railways, and on buses. Italy “must maintain a high level of alert and strengthen security measures across the entire national territory, especially at vulnerable targets,” Mr Alfano said.
