A SMALL city in northern France could hold the key to unravelling the entire European Union (EU) as it becomes the centre of a growing call to leave the bloc.

Beauvais, which sits between Calais and Paris, is overwhelmingly in favour of a “Frexit” and has been spurred on by Britain voting to leave.

Most well known in the UK as a cheaper alternative to Paris’ airports with its budget Ryanair flights – accounting for 80 per cent of the airport’s traffic – the city is part of an increasing number of French people wanting to leave the bloated Brussels club.

With growing fears over increased immigration many in the city are supporting National Front (FN) president, Marine Le Pen’s calls for a clean break from the union.

In December’s first round of regional elections, her party won a strong 34 per cent of the vote in the Beauvais area.

And the 55,000-population city was one of the most vociferous opponents to a 2005 referendum on whether the EU should establish an all-powerful European constitutional treaty.

A total of 60 per cent in Beauvais voted against its creation, compared to less than 55 per cent nationally, which helped, along with the Dutch, to stop the treaty coming into fruition at all.
