Matthew Parris, a former MP for West Derbyshire, told BBC Daily Politics he could see why far-left members of the Labour Party remain so outraged by Tony Blair’s conduct.

He said: “I get some sense of why the Labour left and the Corbyn faction are so angry.

“I get some sense of what drives them; this denial of a total catastrophe.

“I was against the Iraq war from the start, but it wasn’t a crime.

It was worse than a crime, it was a huge blunder, it was a chapter of miscalculations and incompetence.”

Mr Blair was heavily criticised in the Chilcot report, including for the fact it was found he had failed to exhaust all the diplomatic options before proceeding with military action.

But Mr Parris, now a columnist for The Times, stopped short of accusing Mr Blair of lying or deceiving the British public.

He continued: “Two charges laid against Tony Blair, however, I think go too far.

“One that he knowingly lied, I don’t think he did and I don’t think the Chilcot report suggests it, he simply managed to persuade himself.

“And two that he had a private understanding with the president of the United States, I don’t think it’s wrong for a statesman to have private understandings with other statesmen.
