However, the Hollywood star has caused controversy by holding the gala in the French resort of St Tropez instead of Los Angeles, where most of his A-list friends and guests are based.

Green campaigners have now criticised the 41-year-old for the enormous cost to the environment that their travels will have, the MailOnline has stated.

The reports come just months after Leonardo warned about the dangers of climate change as he collected his Academy Award for best actor.

The likes of Kate Hudson, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz, Robert De Niro, Scarlett Johansson, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Kevin Spacey are all expected to attend.

The dinner, entitled Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Annual Gala To Fund Climate and Biodiversity Projects, will be held on July 20 at the Bertaud Belieu Vineyards.

The publication reported that if one of the 500 invited opts to fly the 12,000-mile round trip from the US to France by private jet, they will produce 86 tons of carbon dioxide greenhouse gas.

Meanwhile, a source told Express.co.uk that Leonardo was “flying commercial” and that “many donors and guests are already in or near St Tropez during this time of year.”
