Government spokesman and secretary of state for public diplomacy Zoltán Kovács said he would vote for Hungary to leave the EU after Brussels failed to take control of the migrant crisis.
Mr Kovács said: “Seeing the EU’s recent migration politics, I would vote to leave the EU in case of a referendum. This is my personal opinion.
“This is the reason why we have to do everything to change the EU’s migration politics in the future.
“The EU’s plan regards to the mandatory migration quotas is a nonsense.”
His comments come one day after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s chief of staff Janos Lazar became the first senior government official to say he would be in favour of leaving the EU altogether.
A staunch EU critic Mr Orban’s ruling Fidesz party has initiated a referendum of its own, to be held in September or October, on whether Hungary should reject any future mandatory quotas from Brussels to resettle migrants arriving en masse from countries such as Syria.
