A huge police investigation is underway in Birstall, West Yorkshire, after Jo Cox, the Labour MP for the West Yorkshire seat Batley and Spen was attacked.

The MP’s office has confirmed she was hurt while she was conducting a surgery for her constituents at Birstall Library.

One eyewitness said the 41-year-old mother of two was left lying in a pool of blood on the pavement after a gunman shot her three times after first assaulting her outside her advice surgery.

The MP was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary, where a spokesman for West Yorkshire Police confirmed she sustained “serious injuries and is in a critical condition”.

They added a 52-year-old man has been arrested and police are searching the scene for evidence.

Also injured in the attack, which lasted for around 15 minutes, was a man said to be in his 50s, who suffered “slight injuries”.
