Following a huge earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale which hit Ternate in North Maluku, another 6.2 tremor occurred 145 miles off the coast off the south Indonesian island of Lombok.

The quake struck 18 miles beneath the surface, but was still felt by locals on land, sparking fears a tsunami could hit the coasts of Indonesia.

The tremors lasted repeatedly for three to four seconds, according to locals, which sparked something of a frenzy.

One local is quoted as saying: “The quake went on for quite a while.

“People ran out from houses in panic.”

The most recent quake follows a spate of tremors in the so-called ‘Ring of Fire’, which was aptly given its name due to its volatile seismic activity.
