The Christian Democrats (CDU) leader is said to be at loggerheads once again with Horst Seehofer, Bavarian state premier and leader of sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU).

According to local media the decade-old rivalry has been reignited by tensions over how to deal with the rise of far-right party Alternative for Germany (AFD) and Merkel’s open door refugee policy.

Mrs Merkel has also been accused of taking the party too far to the left by removing key conservatives from her cabinet.

Party insiders expect the issue to come to a head at the CDU/CSU summit later this month.

The two parties, known as the Union in the national parliament, act as one group in the lower house of parliament and have a history dating back to 1949.

Heiner Geissler, an 86-year-old CDU veteran, told public broadcaster ARD: “This is a first.

“For the first time, the CSU questions the unity of the two parties, blaming the CDU for a drift to the Left, towards the political centre. This has to stop.”
