The vessels from Kim Jong-un’s hermit state had strayed into South Korea waters for 10 minutes before it came under fire.

The South Korean navy fired five rounds of warning shots after an order for the vessels to retreat was ignored.

The military and fishing ships then fled back into North Korea waters with no injuries or damage reported.

The incident occurred at around 7.30am local time in waters disputed by North Korea, who don’t recognise the boundary drawn up by the UN at the end of the Korean War.

The maverick state frequently breach the boundary as part of military and fishing operations, leading to several deadly skirmishes in recent years.
