A 49-year old woman in Pennsylvania has been diagnosed with a strain of bacteria completely immune to antibiotics.

Experts have warned the arrival of this illness “heralds the emergence of truly pan-drug resistant bacteria” and fear that this could represent the “end of the road” for antibiotics.

According to a study published in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, the strain is a form of E.coli.

When superbugs, some of which can claim the lives of 50 per cent of their infectants, fail to react to the majority of antibiotics, health experts resort to a super-antibiotic called colistin but even this has been rendered useless.
