Officers inside the vehicle fled as a smoke bomb was thrown inside by a gang armed with batons chanting “police everywhere, justice nowhere” in Paris.
The head of France’s police force strongly condemned the attack as unacceptable “brutality” which put the lives of two officers at risk.
The two policemen managed to escape before the car went up in flames but suffered some bruising.
The incident came as police trade unions called for officers to demonstrate against violence against officers during a series of protests in France.
The unprecedented move saw police officers take to the streets of Paris to protest against “anti-police hatred” during protests which have often erupted into violence.
