A quake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck 34 kilometres north of Rosa Zarate in the northwest of the country.

Despite electricity being cut locally and “small damages”, there were no reports of injuries, death or widespread destruction.

Ecuador’s president Rafael Correa moved to reassure his countrymen by tweeting “keep calm everyone”, and stating that there was no threat of a tsunami.

The earthquake struck the South American country at what could be the worst time, with it still reeling in fear from the massive 7.8 magnitude that hit the South American country on April 16, leaving a total of 659 people dead.
