Manchester United’s final Barclays Premier League game of the season has been abandoned after 75,000 fans were evacuated.

A suspect package, believed to be a mobile phone with wires sticking out of it attached to a gas pipe, was found in the North West Quadrant.

The bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion in the ground after assessing the suspect package, Greater Manchester Police confirmed.

Concerns have been raised there may be another package at the stadium.

Kick-off was initially delayed but security staff ordered the evacuation around 15 minutes before before the match against Bournemouth was due to start.

Fans in the Stretford End and Sir Alex Ferguson stand were asked to leave their seats moments before club bosses ordered the entire stadium to be evacuated.

Security teams were seen patrolling the ground with sniffer dogs and the Amy Bomb Disposal Unit was called to the scene as fans poured out of the stadium.
