President Obama has ordered all public schools to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms that match their gender identity.
The sweeping decree sent to all school districts is not be legally binding but those that do not abide by the new ruling could face lawsuits or lose federal aid.
The Obama administration made the announcement on Friday in a move that could anger members of the Republican Party.
‘There is no room in our schools for discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against transgender students on the basis of their sex,’ Attorney General Loretta Lynch said.
‘This guidance gives administrators, teachers, and parents the tools they need to protect transgender students from peer harassment and to identify and address unjust school policies,’ she added.
Education Secretary John King Jr said: ‘No student should ever have to go through the experience of feeling unwelcome at school or on a college campus.
