Donald Trump said Friday morning that states – not the federal government – should have the right to determine whether transgender schoolchildren are allowed to use the bathrooms that correlate with their self-chosen gender identities.

‘Let the states decide,’ Trump told Today. ‘And I think it’s much better as a local issue. I don’t think it’s a federal issue where the federal government gets involved.’

President Barack Obama’s administration put the issue front and center this morning as it issued new guidelines mandating the policy change.

The shift comes within days of the Department of Justice and the state of North Carolina suing each other over a state law requiring the use of restroom facilities in schools that match the gender on an individual’s birth certificate.

Trump said Friday morning on three talk shows that states should have the final say on such regulations.

‘I believe it should be states’ rights and I think the states should make the decision. They’re more capable of making the decision. I’ve felt that from the beginning,’ Trump said on Good Morning America.

On Today he said, ‘I see what’s happening and it’s become such a big situation. And you know what? Everybody has to be protected and I feel strongly about that. But you’re talking about a tiny, tiny group of population.’

‘With that being said, everybody has to be protected. but I would leave it up to the states.’
