BRITAIN is “sleepwalking to catastrophe” by refusing to acknowledge a growing racial tension, a former equality watchdog leader has sensationally claimed.

With immigration now 100 times higher than in the Fifties, Trevor Phillips has warned an underlying distrust between different groups and nationalities in Britain could lead to an all-out conflict.

The former head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission said the country’s leaders were too “complacent” and “squeamish” to even consider the “dark side of a diverse society” and expressed his fear a backlash may soon occur.

In a 100-page report for think-tank Cavitas, he said: “Squeamishness about addressing diversity and its discontents risks allowing our country to sleepwalk to a catastrophe that will set community against community, endorse sexist aggression, suppress freedom of expression, reverse hard-won civil liberties, and undermine the liberal democracy that has served this country so well for so long.”

Instead of addressing these issues, Mr Phillips claimed, the country was maintaining “a polite silence”.

He said: “Rome may not yet be in flames, but I think I can smell the smouldering whilst we hum to the music of liberal self-delusion.”

Mr Phillips warned “grumbling at the school gate” about foreigners could escalate into something far more serious, and accused Britain’s leaders of failing to see the wood for the trees by focusing too much on big issues like female genital mutilation.
