EXCLUSIVE: ISLAMIC State is planning a series of “spectacular” attacks designed to show the world it is still a potent force despite sustaining massive losses on the battlefields of Iraq and Syria, a NATO terror chief has warned.

Dr Jamie Shea, the military alliance’s expert on international terrorism, said the Islamist group wanted to “show it is still alive by lashing out” on Europe and the United States.
And those attacks could be delivered using new techniques, including explosives implanted inside the bodies of suicide bombers.
ISIS has repeatedly warned of follow-up attacks at least as deadly as those carried out in Brussels and Paris in recent months.
Yesterday, Italian authorities warned of the threat of Islamist extremists targeting holidaymakers on European beaches this summer.
Dr Shea, NATO’s deputy assistant secretary general for emerging security challenges, who has inside knowledge of the campaign to defeat ISIS, said there were “worrying signs” that ISIS was preparing for a fresh assault on Western targets, including the UK.
