EUROPE’S most senior law enforcement officer has warned that a terror attack by Islamic State militants on the UK remains likely.

Rob Wainwright, the head of EU’s law enforcement agency Europol, said there were a “sizeable number of potential terrorists in Europe”, describing returning jihadis as a “serious threat” to the safety of the continent’s 500 million citizens.

Europol estimates there are around 5,000 ISIS fighters on the continent ready to unleash jihad on the West.

And Mr Wainwright, a leading voice on European security, said ISIS had been explicit in their intention to hit Britain with an attack at least as deadly as Paris or Brussels.

Speaking at a security conference in London today, he said: “It is not alarmist to say that the nature of the threat is so complex, propagated by a dispersed community of potential terrorists, that another attack in Europe is possible if not likely.

“It could happen in the United Kingdom, certainly that is the intention of the group and it frequently promises such an attack in its videos.

“I think therefore all countries in Europe are faced with a very serious threat.”
